The FK8 proved that a front-wheel-drive hatchback could deliver serious track performance without becoming miserable on the street. Its 306-horsepower turbo engine is strong, the six-speed shifter is one of the best in the category and the adaptive dampers give it a calmer ride than the bodywork suggests.
It is also genuinely practical. The rear seat and hatch make it easier to live with than a two-door sports car, although the bright red interior and aggressive exterior styling are impossible to ignore.
What changed during the run?
The 2020 refresh brought revised suspension tuning, improved brake cooling, a larger grille and added driver-assistance features. Honda also introduced the lighter Limited Edition for 2021, but collector pricing usually makes the standard Touring model the smarter car to drive regularly.
All U.S. FK8s use the same basic 306-horsepower engine and six-speed manual layout. Condition, tires and modification history create a bigger difference than chasing one model year.
What should you inspect?
Type Rs are durable when treated well, but many have seen track days, tunes or rushed shifts. A specialist inspection helps identify wear that a clean interior may not reveal.
